Xippas gallery is pleased to announce its participation to MIRA Art Fair, Special Project section, with a work by Brazilian artist Saint Clair Cemin.
The sculpture One Century Smites Another, created in 1999, depicts two figures locked in a violent struggle, one subduing the other to the ground — a symbol of one century overpowering another. The artist first modeled it in plaster, coated it with shellac, then layered green plastilene sheets like the sediment of time, before casting it in bronze, the material of endurance and memory.
Behind its form lies a meditation on the wars of the twentieth century and the haunting question of whether the twenty-first century will surpass it in its cruelty or destruction — a question that deeply resonates with the evolution of today’s world.
