Lionel Estève was artist-in-residence at the Academia Belgica in Rome from February to June. To mark the occasion, a special exhibition was held on June 11, curated by Anna Cestelli Guidi and Cornelia Lauf.
For his installation at the Academia Belgica, Lionel Estève presented around thirty pewter silhouettes evoking Rome’s most iconic buildings. Mounted on cardinal red felt, these delicate yet monumental forms use modest materials to question architecture as a symbol of power.
A poet of materials, Estève transforms humble elements into fluid, often nature-inspired forms. Known for his vibrant sense of color and his ability to balance lightness with gravity, his pratice includes optical wall pieces, garden-like installations, and playful explorations of architecture, ecology, and the imagination.
