The Galerie Xippas is delighted to present an exhibition by the Spanish artist Pepa Prieto. On this occasion, she will show a set of new paintings.

Although, Pepa Prieto’s work shares a lot in common with the familiar gender of still life and abstraction, each painting reveals the language she uses to explore memory and personal narratives. The proximity or distance of an object, the gestural mark, the clarity or haziness of details is similar to how our memory works, with its gaps and inconsistencies. The way Pepa Prieto builds her compositions is a tool to retrieve and forge new connections between disparate pieces of memory. Through their visual realignment on the canvas, they get a meaning. The paintings act as vehicles for the viewer’s own memory recall and story telling. Pepa prieto creates a fertile ground of experimentation, weaving the stories of her life together with those of others.

For this set of paintings, Pepa Prieto got inspired by her own migration experience, moving from her homeland to The United States. People leave for diverse reasons; wishing another kind of life is one of them. Based on their own images, own ideas, own knowledge, they build an image of their new life, sometimes very far from the reality. Pepa Prieto’s artwork represents this intellectual and emotional process. They are a metaphor of the constant fluctuation between your reality and your imagination

Pepa Prieto was born in 1973 in Grenade, Spain. She first studied painting at the Complutense University Madrid and then mixed media at Central Saint Martins College in London. In 2010, she won a residency at the Fountainhead Residency in Miami, followed in 2012 by another one at the Center Contemporary Art (CCA) Andratx on the island of Mallorca. She won the same residency again at the CCA in 2016. After that, she participated to a group exhibition at the Torrance Art Museum in California. Her artwork is regularly exhibited at Walter Maciel Gallery in Los Angeles. The Center Contemporary Art (CCA) Andratx hosted two of her solo shows, one in 2014 and one in 2015.
