Xippas Montevideo Past

Xippas Arte Contemporáneo is very pleased to announce Darren Almond’s first solo exhibition in Montevideo.

The versatile British artist will travel next December to present his work. The show will include photographs of his masterpiece “Fullmoons” along with emblematic pieces of his most recent work.

Darren Almond is an artist and a traveller. In each piece he transmits and redefines his own concepts of time, space, duration and collective memory. He uses different formats for expressing his art such as photography, film, sculpture and altered objects.

From the artist’s point of view, time expands and contracts becoming malleable. Time is experienced subjectively and can be perceived in several ways. Inspired by the concept of geographic boundaries and the significance of reaching them, he travels to remote places capturing the point where space, time and historic reality meet.

Since 1998 he works on the sequence of landscapes “Fullmoons” where he uses only moonlight and long time exposures. The result is a collection of touching landscapes passing magically from night to day revealing what is invisible to the human eye.

Almond’s landscapes seem to confront the observer to an ultimate reality. The spirite is elavated but, at the same time, human existence is perceived as insignificant compared to nature’s immensity.

Darren Almond was born in Wigan, United Kingdom on 1971. He lives and works in London. He has presented solo exhibitions at White Cube Gallery (The Principle of Moments, 2010); Parasol Unit (2008); SITE Santa Fe (2007); Museum Folkwang, Essen (2006); K21, Düsseldorf (2005); De Appel, Kunsthalle Zürich y Tate Britain (2001); The Renaissance Society, Chicago (1999). He participated in group exhibitions at the Miami Art Museum (2011); MAC/VAL, Vitry-sûr-Seine (2010); Tate Triennial, Tate Britain and Frac Lorraine, Metz (2009); Moscow Biennale (2007); The Turner Prize, Tate Britain (2005); The Busan Biennale (2004); Venice Biennale (2003); Berlin Biennale (2001), ‘Sensation’ (1997-1999).
