Farah Atassi

Born in 1981 in Brussels, Farah Atassi lives and works in Paris.

Farah Atassi develops a figurative painting using the vocabulary of abstract painting: the geometric shapes that efficiently make up the composition create spaces in which the objects are put on “display”. Her paintings deals with thick layers and repentance that contrast with the rigidity of straight lines. Similar to a collage, they meticulously combine anachronistic forms with contradictory appearances, borrowed from sculpture, painting, and design. Through her complete dedication to this media, Farah Atassi develops a painting style that is simultaneously conceptual and joyful.

She graduated from ENSBA in 2005 and was revealed in the exhibition Dynasty at the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris and at the Palais de Tokyo. Her work was also shown in the exhibition The Pompidou Center in the State Hermitage in 2010, at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg in 2016 and at the Museum of Art, Architecture & Technology in Lisbon in 2017. Winner of the Prix Jean-François Prat in 2012, she was nominated for the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2013 before going on residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York. In 2014, Le Grand Café, Centre d’art Contemporain de Saint-Nazaire in France and Le Portique, Centre d’Art Contemporain du Havre in France devoted a solo exhibition to her, as did the Extra City Kunsthal in Antwerp in 2015. In 2018, she had a solo exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Cambrai in France, as well as at the Consortium de Dijon in France in 2019. This exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue on Farah Atassi’s work published by Presses du Réel.

Her works are present in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, the Fondation Louis Vuitton – LVMH, the Marciano Collection in Los Angeles and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, among others.
